Kim's First Archery Bull Elk
Written by Dave Dukat

Kim McCann with an Arizona ElkKim McCann recenty drew a coveted archery elk tag in Northeastern Arizona's Unit 1.  Kim is no stranger to archery hunting, with several animals under her belt, but this was her first archery elk.

Kim and her husband Dan both drew tags in the area, after many year of applying, and Kim was lucky enough to take this great 6 X 7 bull.  The bull came into a wallow and the shot was successful at 33 yards  The bull green scores 338" and it will be tough for Kim to match the size of her first bull, but it sure will be fun trying.

Dan was also successful on the hunt, taking a six point bull at a mere nine yards with a recurve bow.

Arizona does an excellent job managing their wildlife to achieve world class animals in many of the units.  The archery hunt occurs in the rut, and there is not a better place to be in the United States, than Arizona with an archery elk tag in your hands.

The bull to cow ratio in some units, including Unit 1 is truly amazing and you have the opportunity to see more big bulls in a week long hunt, than you may see in other states in your lifetime.  With this many mature bulls, the rut is completely out of control and many bulls shatter horns as they fight for the chance to breed.

Congratulations Kim and Dan and good luck to all of you that apply in Arizona.
