Page 2 of 3 Aoudad were introduced to Texas and New Mexico back in the 1940's and 50's. They originated from the deserts of northern Africa and have found parts of Texas to be an ideal landscape with plenty of feed and mountains to call home. The problem is, the majority of Texas is private land and you must obtain permission to hunt. Many outfitters are well aware of this and have leased the areas that the aoudad have settled in.That aside, you can still find reasonable hunting trips that will test your sheep hunting endurance to the maximum. We found just such a hunt and four of us loaded up the truck with enough gear for a month (for a three day hunt) and headed for the mountains. After nine hours of driving, and with the sun receding, we pulled over a hill into a canyon to find jagged rocky peaks jutting out of the bottom of the canyon. It was truly intimidating to see the mountains we would be hunting as they looked uninhabitable and too steep to climb. This was the sheep hunt I was looking to find. We met briefly with the landowner and he got us set up in camp and gave us a few options of where to start our hunt. We set up the tents in the dark, and enjoyed the starlight in anticipation of the following day. Morning couldn't come soon enough and at six we were packing gear and getting ready. Unfortunately, light didn't come until around 7:45 and since we arrived in camp after dark, we wanted to have a look around before the hiking began.
