I have been helping a friend this year learn the ropes on dove hunting. I lent him a 12 gauge Remington 870 express magnum to use and he seems to handle it well. He is interested in purchasing an affordable shotgun that he can use while he learns the sport, and maybe in a few years pass down to get his two young kids involved also. I recommended a 20 gauge Remington 870 with a 26" barrel. I think the Wingmaster is probably the nicest gun in the line, but the Express or Youth would probably work almost as well for less.

Does anyone have any feedback on Mossbergs, Winchesters or other altenatives?

I shot the 870 Ex for about five years with no problems before taking the plunge and upgrading to a Browning Citori. I think the Express goes for about $275 and there is a promotion for a $30 rebate. I think the Wingmaster is about double that amount. Any input is appreciated.

As far as price and reliability you can't beat an 870. I would get the wingmaster rather than the Express as it won't ever loose value (as long as you take care of it). Winchester Super X series are great as well, but more expensive. I had one for years and it was my favorite shotgun. Very reliable. Mossberg's in my opinion kick like a mule and I wouldn't own one.
