Spot Hog Real Deal SiteSpot Hogg is an archery specialty company known best for their arrow releases and sights.· When I finally got tired of my old square PSE sight, I decided to research finding a great new sight.· Sights have come a long way in the last ten years and you will be amazed at how much a new sight can improve your shooting.

First let's discuss some of the changes and why they help you shoot more accurately.

Round versus square?  If you still have a square guard for your sight pins, this is one of the first items you need to look for in a new sight.  Although the square guards allow more pins they just aren't as accurate.  In the old days (I'll say that a lot) when bows were slow, you needed a lot of space between the pins and therefore the square guard made sense.  With today's ultra fast bows, that need is gone.  The huge advantage you get, is your peep site is round.  With a round bow sight, you can assure you are placing the pins in the exact same position when you look through your peep every time.  Just align the outside of the round guard with the outside of your peep sight.

Fiber optic pins?  The latest and greatest sight pins on the market are made of fiber optics.  Fiber optic material can absorb natural light and discharges the light at it's end.  Even in low light this creates a glow that is easily seen.  Old sight pins were made of plastic or even metal way back when.  As all hunters know, the best time for animal movement is early in the morning or just before dark.  It's tough enough to see a tiny pin, but try seeing one in low light through a tiny peep sight.  This has caused a lot of poor shots or missed opportunities.  Fiber optics have changed that and Spot Hogg has several choices in the size of the tip of the pin.  If your going to shoot past 30 yards, I'd suggest the smaller .019 pins.  The larger pins cover up too much of the animal at longer distances.

Level bubble.  To shoot a bow accurately, especially at longer distance, the sight pins must be mounted square and the bow must be precisely vertical.  A level bubble is a must.  If you don't believe it, tilt your bow and shoot the same pin and see where your arrow goes (if you can find it).

There are many other items that have improved, but we'll save that for another article.  I was also looking for horizontal pins rather than vertical.  I have tried vertical pins and just can't get comfortable with the second through fifth pin.  With horizontal pins, you can see three sides of the animal or target.  With the 2nd through 5th pin of vertical pins, you can only see two sides and this just doesn't work for me.

The Spot Hogg has all the above items and more.  It is built to be rock solid sturdy, but with precision at the same time.  They have recently added wrap around fiber optic pins that should bring more light to the pins for those grey days, mornings, or evenings.  The pin adjustment is accurate although can take some time to get it tuned in exactly with two set screws moving it up and down. Whether it's hunting or target shooting, the Spot Hogg is spot on.  It's a great sight and although more expensive than many, worth the price.
