A good day of dove huntingDove hunting is normally the first bird season of the year and September 1st is always a highly anticipated date.  The weather is normally beautiful and when the doves are flying it's an exciting and challenging hunt.

To top it off, you can now hunt south of the border in the off season and shoot doves to your hearts content.

Got a dove hunt planned?  This is the gear you will need to make it a success.

Gear For the Hunt

  • Gun
  • Shells (game loads with 7 or 7 ½ size shot)
  • Hunting License
  • Migratory Bird Stamp
  • Hunting Vest (preferably camouflage or tan)
  • Hat (preferably camouflage or tan)
  • Hunting Clothes (preferably camouflage or tan)
  • Shooting glasses (or sunglasses)
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray
  • Ear plugs
  • Camera
  • Knife
  • Game Shears (for removing wings)
  • Small Cooler (with drinks and for the birds afterwards)
  • Water (for cleaning up after cleaning the birds)
  • Ice
  • Plastic Bag (for feathers and entrails)
  • Retriever (dog, children, wife, husband, etc.)

If your hunting south of the border where you’ll be shooting hundreds of birds per day you’ll also need:

  • Shooting gloves (you’ll get blisters if you don’t wear them, just shoving shells in the gun)
  • Adhesive Tape (for soft spots)
  • Cheek ointment (if your one of those guys who does it right and keeps his head down on the stock)
  • Gun Cleaning Kit (the high volume shooting will work your gun to the maximum – be prepared for a plug up of some sort).

Get out and give it a try.  It's a lot of fun and great for honing your shooting skills.
