Arizona LionIf you ever get the chance to chase lions on dry ground, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.  Without the assistance of fresh snow on the ground, not only do the dogs have a much more difficult job, but the outfitter or owner of the dogs must know his job extremely well.  If your looking for someone to teach you tracking and hunting skills, these guys are some of the best around.

If you do get a dry ground lion hunt scheduled, here is a list of gear you should consider bringing along:

Essentials

  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Leather Gloves
  • Knife
  • Backpack
  • Gun (Bow/Pistol/Etc.)
  • Bullets (Arrows/Etc.)
  • Cap

Nice to Have

  • GPS
  • Binoculars
  • Plastic Sack
  • Camera
  • Video Camera
  • Flashlight
  • Handkercheif
The plastic sack is for the hide once you remove it from the lion.  Lions can have quite a smell and it’s nice to keep the stench and the blood off your backpack.  The GPS is a good way to get back to the truck, but your outfitter normally knows the mountains he’s hunting.  Keep in mind, if the dogs find a track you may be out all day before you find them (let alone the lion).

My best advice for a lion hunt is get in shape and be prepared to stay all day.  Also keep in mind, you need plenty of water and the lighter the better.  I can guarantee your outfitter will be in top physical condition and you will need every advantage you can get, to just to try to keep up.
